We’re not really sure what to make of this recipe for hot buttered tomato juice… especially considering this isn’t a featured recipe in a tomato juice ad — but in a butterpromo.
It certainly seems odd, but we’ve seen much weirder things done with tomatoes (here, here, here and here for example) — but it feels like an out-of-context sensory experience absent pasta or oyster crackers, a fork or a spoon. Or a pizza crust. Or vodka.
Of course, the ingredient combo doesn’t sound completely out of the realm of normal — a bit like a warm Bloody Mary (with butter), liquefied spaghetti sauce (which usually has oil in it, after all) or a more drinkable tomato soup.
Now, hot buttered tomato soup had been a thing since at least 1955, and that somehow makes more sense… even if it was advertised as being served in mugs to drink.
Who knows, maybe if the internet had been around in 1975, this unique recipe would have gone viral likebulletproof coffee did a few years ago — yet another beverage people randomly started adding butter to until it started to seem less strange.

Land O LakesHot Buttered Tomato Juice
The taste sensation is a surprising “wow.” Butter blends the subtlety of oregano and the zip of Worcestershire with the goodness of tomato juice.
And you start, of course, with Land O Lakes, America’s no. 1 butter. It’s made only from fresh sweet cream for flavor that’s naturally delicate. Look for other recipes in specially marked Land O Lakes butter cartons.
