Using Bone Broth in Dog Treat Recipes

For this recipe, we use a dog safe chicken bone broth. We purchased the bone broth for this recipe, but we’ve also made our own chicken bone broth.

Bone broth has become popular as an alternative health remedy for humans. It's made from boiling animal bones, so it's loaded with calcium and magnesium. We can also use bone broth as a base for soups, stews, and other foods.

Bone broth is a healthy homemade treat for dogs and humans. By using bone broth, you can use the broth to make gummies from scratch.

Whether you make it from scratch or purchase a dog safe bone broth online, the quality of store-bought broth shares many of the benefits.

The Benefits of Using Bone Broth in Dog Treats

The ‘active ingredients’ in bone broth gummy treats are collagen (a protein) and Glycine (an amino acid) which are both found in bone broth.

  • Collagen helps your pup's coat, skin and digestion.
  • Glycine is anti-inflammatory and good for bones and joints and brain health.

In the wild, dogs eat gelatin because it’s found in their prey’s skin, bones, tendons, and cartilage.

Any of our dog gummy recipes are packed with nutritious and healthy gelatin.

Of course, other ingredients in dog gummies will try to offer their own benefits and nutrition, which combined with gelatin makes these tiny, wobbly, fun little treat nutritionally dense and delicious.

Choosing the right Bone Broth for your Dog’s Gummy Treats

You'll want to avoid bone broths that contain sugar or artificial sweeteners, or other colors or additives when making gummies for your pup. All of those are bad for your dog.

I like the CARU Daily Dish Chicken Broth for Dogs and Cats (you can find it in most grocery stores or online on Amazon).

You should ALWAYS avoid giving your dog anything that contains Xylitol, since it is poisonous to dogs.

Basic Easy Chicken Gummy Dog Treat Recipe

Making gummies for your dog is really easy and can be done in a few different ways.I found this is the easiest (and fool-proof) way to make treats. You can use it to make savory or sweet ones depending on the ingredients you use.

How to store Dog Gummies Dog Treats

The gummy dog treats need to be stored in the fridge to prevent them from getting soggy and sticky. They also tend to mold quickly, so you should check them often.

If you want gummies to last longer, spread them out on a plate, tray, or sheet of wax paper and leave them in the fridge uncovered for several hours or overnight. It will help them keep their shape.

Or, you can put them in cornstarch before putting them in an airtight container and refrigerating them to absorb any extra moisture.

Gummy Dog Treat Recipe Variations

Bone broth is my go-to because it’s so healthy and nutritious, but you can also use chicken, beef, or vegetable stock as an alternative, or low sodium broth.

You can add any of the following to your pet's gummies:

  • Any other baby food
  • Grated carrots
  • Finely shredded chicken or turkey breasts
  • Pureed sweet potato
  • Pureed pumpkin
  • Savory stage one baby food
  • Dog Safe Creamy peanut butter
  • Finely chopped fresh parsley
  • Finely chopped fresh mint
