Slow Cooker Grandma’s Famous Baked Beans

This recipe was sent to us by Crock-Pot Ladies reader Pam Barnes for her grandma’s famous baked beans done up in the slow cooker.

We just love “grandma recipes” they are always the best aren’t they?

Unless your grandma can’t cook…

Then this recipe is for you because it comes from a grandma that CAN cook!

Thanks Pam and her grandma for the great recipe!

This recipe serves a crowd too…12 servings. So this is a great dish to take to your next pot-luck or serve at a outdoor barbecue. Everyone loves some baked beans at a BBQ right?

There is a wee bit of prep work involved with these beans…but not too much. Just cutting up some onion and frying up some bacon.

Bacon

You had me at bacon Pam’s grandma!

Then you just open up some cans of baked beans and toss those in (Pam prefers Bush’s Baked Beans, but feel free to use whatever brand YOU like). And then, just let it simmer away for 4 hours and let it rest for 1 hour, to thicken up those beautiful bean juices.

That sounds wrong…bean juices.

But oh well…that is what they are!

Can I Double This Recipe?

This recipe can easily be doubled. To double the recipe use a larger slow cooker (6 quart or larger) and cook for an additional 1 hour.

Do These Baked Beans Freeze Well?

Baked beans freeze well for longer term storage. If you have leftover baked beans or just want to make a big batch of beans and store them in the freezer you can easily do that. Once the beans are cooked, turn your slow cooker OFF and allow the beans to come to room temperature. Then, spoon the beans into freezer containers or freezer zippered plastic food storage bags. Label your containers or bags with their contents and date and store in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Use starches to thicken beans

Do you have to soak beans before making baked beans? ›

Soaking beans in the refrigerator overnight will reduce the time they have to cook drastically. And the texture of the beans will also be it their best, with fewer split-open and burst ones. But like we said, you don't have to commit this hard.

What can I add to canned baked beans to make them better? ›

Stir together baked beans, onion, syrup, brown sugar, ketchup, and mustard in a large bowl. Pour into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Lay bacon slices across the top. Bake in the preheated oven until the bacon is browned and the beans have thickened, 35 to 40 minutes.

What to add to bush's baked beans? ›

Extra protein: Add diced ham, cooked ground beef, or shredded chicken to the baked beans for an extra boost of protein. Additional vegetables: Include diced green bell pepper, onions, or mushrooms to the recipe for added texture and flavor. Tangy: Replace yellow mustard with Dijon, whole-grain mustard, or dry mustard.

Why do people put baking soda in baked beans? ›

Baking soda creates an alkaline environment which reduces soaking and cooking time and preserves the beans' skin.

Why did my baked beans come out hard? ›

This is most likely because the dehydrated beans you are using are old. It seems to be a growing problem to find fresh dehydrated beans in the US. This would happen to my family all the time when we used to make slow cooked Red Beans and Rice. I thought it just needed to be either soaked or cooked longer.

Why are my baked beans still hard after cooking? ›

Cooking with hard water

If you pre-soaked your beans and still find that they are not softening, it may be because you are cooking them in hard water.

How can I make my beans thicker? ›

After cooking, try mashing a small portion of the beans and stir them back into the whole beans. With re-fried beans almost all of the beans are mashed. If you don't want to smash any of the beans, you might stir in some small amounts of instant potato flakes until you reach the desired thickness.

How can I thicken my ham and beans? ›

Another way to add thickness and flavor to your ham and bean soup is by pureeing some vegetables. This works well with cooked potatoes, carrots, or even a combination of both.
