Our lucky Penny is turning 3 this July! Just like having human kids, the time sure does fly. She’s spoiled rotten, as any dog should be, but also pretty well trained. We worked hard at that her first 6 months with us and continue to do so. Being a Beagle, she’s not picky about her treats, but these Cheddar Dog Biscuits are definitely a favorite. I mean, what dog doesn’t love cheese??

Homemade Dog Treats

Every other month or so, I’ll bake up a batch of these Cheddar Dog Biscuits. They’re perfect for training your new puppy, rewarding your veteran dog, or as a gift for your doggie friends. We’ve even taste tested one and definitely see the appeal. HA! They cool nice and crunchy, and bonus, they smell good while they bake unlike milk-bone dog biscuits. Blech. For all the unconditional love we get from our dogs, I think they deserve even more back!

Cheddar Dog Biscuit Recipe

These dog biscuits only contain 5 natural ingredients – all safe for dogs.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Rice Flour: Rice flour is rich in calcium, acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, and is gluten free, which is a good alternative for dogs who are sensitive to wheat products. It has an almost milky flavor and a higher starch content, helping the biscuit ingredients stick together.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Cheddar cheese provides beneficial protein, calcium, and vitamins that support healthy bones and teeth.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce: Apples provide a significant amount of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Also, they are high in fiber, which may benefit your dog’s digestive system. Only use plain applesauce that is made from pure apples without any added sugar or additives.
  • Egg: Eggs are safe for dogs as long as they are fully cooked. Cooked eggs are a wonderful source of digestible protein and riboflavin, and can help an upset stomach.
  • Honey: Honey is naturally high in enzymes and antioxidants and safe for dogs in small amounts. Some even claim it helps with seasonal allergies and kennel cough, although that has not been proven. If using raw honey, avoid feeding it to puppies, dogs with compromised immune systems, obese dogs, or dogs with diabetes, since it is unpasteurized and may contain the presence of botulism spores.

DISCLAIMER

I am not a Veterinarian! Nobody knows your dog like you do and not all dogs digest human food the same. I recommend letting your dog sample a small amount before giving them an entire biscuit. Use your best judgement and consult your Vet if you have concerns.

Recipe Notes

  • Let your dog sample a small amount first: Not all dogs digest human food the same way, so I recommend letting your dog sample a small amount first, and see how they feel before giving them an entire biscuit.
  • Feed in moderation: These are treats and not meant to be a substitute for their real food or be given in excess. Feed in moderation.
  • Biscuit cutters: This recipe makes about 25 to 30 biscuits using a 3-inch cookie cutter. You can, of course, use any type of cookie cutter. Heart shaped, star shaped, any shape – your dog won’t care! Altering the size, will effect cook time though.

How Long Do Homemade Dog Biscuits Last?

Make sure these dog treats cool to room temperature and are crisp before storing, then seal them in an airtight container. They will keep up to 2 weeks (possibly longer. Ours never last long enough to test their exact shelf life!)
